The modern city of Trikala lies in the place of ancient Trikki, which has been known since Homer's days. One of Pinios' daughters, the personification of health, beauty and youth was also called Trikki. Some people attribute the naming both of the nymph and the city to the adjectival complement "Trikali" (= three times good - fabulous), that was given to Artemis, a local goddess. Thus the name "Trikala" is written with one "k". Legends have it that Asklipios, the god of medicine, was born in Trikki.
